Laxmi, the most loved South Asian brand in America for over 5 decades, was born out of the absolute need of a young family to be able to enjoy cuisines from its home country while being away from home. It all began in 1972 when Mr. G. L. Soni founded his South Asian foods company ‘House of Spices’ from the garage of his home in New York.
As a South Asian immigrant couple living in New York, the Sonis, particularly Mrs. Shobhana Soni, faced challenges every day to find Indian ingredients for home cooking. Her necessity to cook authentic Indian food for her family and create a home away from home inspired Mr. G. L. Soni to start importing Indian cooking ingredients through friends and family. Soon, the couple found that they weren’t alone in their longing for homestyle cooking. In 1972, Mr. G. L. Soni channelized his enterprising spirit to set up a small grocery shop in his garage. What started as a humble endeavour to lovingly blend heritage, family values and traditions to craft delightful experiences for South Asian immigrant families, soon expanded into a melting pot of flavours and cultures that is now a part of the House of Spices family.
To be #1 brand choice for South Asian food in North America.

Mr G L Soni fittingly named his enterprise Laxmi in honour of his parents, Mr Laxmidas and Mrs Laxmibai. In the Hindu culture, Goddess Laxmi embodies abundance. The name perfectly fits the company's vision of providing authentic cooking ingredients in abundance to South Asian families living in the USA and helping them stay connected with their culture through food.
